GO VELOURIA!!
Velouria is having a great time working out with her mom at home.
Animal walks, like Velouria's bear crawl and frog jumps, are great additions to a fitness course.
She also found out that giving piggy-back rides to her little brother is a fun, challenging, fitness activity too!

This fun obstacle course from Estella has a new challenge: BIG flip flop lunges!!
She includes some stretching and gymnastics activities too. Obstacle courses are a great way to be creative, exercise in many different ways, and they are easy to change when you get bored with the same one. |
Magnolia shows off her creative obstacle course.
I love how she wrote down each obstacle and how the course winds through so many rooms of her house! Great job, Magnolia! |

Whoa!
Hudson, the blood cell, is working so hard pumping through his awesome living room circulatory system course! He's super fast when he's carrying oxygen. Way to go, Hudson! |
Hi Ms. Bastasch!
We had fun today with your circulatory system. I made it out of magazines and books. It was fun! Ruby did it too. I miss you and wish we could be in school and see you!! Ruby misses you too. I hope we go back in fall. Thank you for being the best PE teacher!!!!!!! Thank you. Gus and Ruby THANK YOU, Gus and Ruby!! |
"Jim" is back!!
I really encourage you to go to www.kidshealth.org and explore the pages about how the body works. I love teaching you how your body works and you're usually really curious. I think finding an active way to teach it is fun AND it helps you learn. I hope that when you realize how hard your heart is working, you'll be more likely to want to take care of it.
SETUP
This is the way I prepared my "Jim" heart obstacle course. I thought it would be easier to film it if I just stayed in the living room. You could choose to make your heart-course as big as your whole house or even include the yard!

This video is intended to be watched in plank position, in downward dog yoga pose, or any other sideways balance position. Pretty clever, huh?
Ok, the truth is I tried to rotate it and I can't figure it out. |

Here I go! Into "Jim's" circulatory system!
How many times can you circulate through your obstacle course in 5 minutes? It takes about one minute for one blood cell to circulate through your body. When your body is exercising, it needs more oxygen. So, your heart with pump faster to deliver the extra oxygen during exercise! |
- The average heart is the size of an adult fist.
- Your heart will beat about 115,000 times each day.
- The beating sound your heart makes is caused by the opening and closing of its valves.
- Each day, your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood.
- If you were to stretch out your blood vessel system, it would extend over 60,000 miles.
- Laughing is good for your heart. It reduces stress and gives a boost to your immune system.
The heat pumps about 1,900 gallons of blood each day! That’s 1.3 gallons each minute. Can you pump that fast? Find out how here
Obstacle Courses!
Why are obstacle courses on the Fitness page? Well, it's time I share a little secret. Obstacle courses are for your FITNESS. They are also a ton of fun, so when we do them in P.E. I know you'll have fun AND get a good workout.

Our third grader Leah is doing an amazing job trying to beat her previous record!
I love how they used a timer to try and beat their record each time. |
Leah's kindergarten brother Jacob is on track to win! You don't have to race someone else to win. You can win by beating your old record OR you can use this saying:
"if I won, I had fun!". Looks like Leah and Jacob both had FUN! |

In P.E. class we use obstacle courses to learn about how our body works. Maybe if we appreciate how amazing our bodies are, we'll take better care of them.
Many years ago I started making an obstacle course for the circulatory system to teach about heart function and heart health. I named the obstacle course "Jim". Since then, I made "Jim" into a digestive system and I hope to make a "Jim" mind too. I'll share my at-home "Jim" next week, but I wonder if you could make an obstacle course this week? Maybe you could even try and make your own "Jim" for your house? |
Sets and Reps
Instead of using time at each circuit station, you can also use "sets and reps". This is a term used in sports and fitness a lot, but it could really be used for many things. A rep is a REPETITION. Doing 20 jumping jacks means you did 20 reps. Those 20 REPS are 1 SET, or one cycle, of jumping jacks. If you rest and then do another 20 of jumping jacks, you did 2 sets of jumping jacks.
Jumping jacks are something you can count. If your workout has a position to hold, like a stretch or a plank, you may use a different way of "counting". Singing a song or the ABCs or just counting during those activities will work great.

You can choose any exercises for YOUR ABC workout!
I chose to do 4 sets. That means I will repeat my three exercises four times.
How many sets will YOU do?
My ABC workout has three exercises: A. Cobra to Downward Dog (4 reps) B. Plank (hold for singing the ABCs) C. Drowning Bug (50 reps) |
